Patrimony
Versão Portuguesa

From pre-pombaline buildings to the ultra-modern architecture of the companies that moved into this zone in recent years, many and diverse are the values of the built patrimony of the S. Mamede county.
Integrating the romantic journey of the city - the 'Seventh Hill' which Lisbon 94 invented, preserving the unique set of manufacturing and housing Amoreiras, the S. Mamede county has yet to show the amazing Salitre street, the environment of the early century neighbourhood Barata Salgueiro or the examples of Art Deco and Modernism in the Streets Rodrigo da Fonseca, and Nova S. Mamede, among other things equally significant..

SEVENTH HILL

Subject to special urban intervention by the Lisbon 94, the 'Seventh Hill' has been rediscovered by the people of Lisbon in general and, perhaps, by the residents of the S. Mamede county. From the Rato square to the Principe Real, it now becomes more evident the urban and architectural richness of this romantic track, from which we will describe the main buildings, in chronological order.

CASTILHO PALACE – Beginning of the eighteenth century / Changes in the nineteenth century

Street Escola Politécnica, 38 - 46
The noble house is one of the oldest buildings in this area. Of the four floors that presents only the first two are from the beginning of the eighteenth century, since the other two should have been added by the initiative of the Castilho family, who resided there until the mid-nineteenth century.

ROYAL SILK FACTORY - 1735-1741/MODIFICATIONS in 1757

Street Escola Politecnica 219-289.

The building of the Royal Silk factory, whit a façade that stretches along the street for about 110 m, is one of the most representative examples of industrial Portuguese Archaeology. His current façade, with a prominent central body, is the result of the widening works of the original plant, ordered by the Marquês do Pombal. With the decline of the factory, from 1835, its facilities had many uses, stands out a stained glass studio of Ricardo Leone and in the corner to the Rato, an old tavern, now pastry that held the array of decorative tiles.

RATO WATER FOUNTAIN -1752-1754

Authorship attributed to Carlos Mardel, the Rato Fountain was put in it’s currently place, around 1794, remaining as an important identification element of the square, where he witnessed many events. Recently renovated.

ALAGOAS PALACE - 1757-1762

Street Escola Politécnica, 161-195.
Extensive building with a chapel on top, the Palace Alagoas was built by one  businessman, named Jose Francisco da Cruz, ennobled with the surname and arms of Alagoa, in the early Pombaline days. As demonstrated by Jose Sarmento de Matos (The Seventh Hill, pp. 124-126), it is not exactly a palace, it’s a housing and shopping complex, whose decorative uniformity give an idea of unity, that don’t actually exist. In paragraph.183, an arch gives access to enclosed gardens and farm, where existed until about 1850, the famous "Forest Egyptian».

REBELO DE ANDRADE-SEIA PALACE - c. 1760

Escola Politécnica Street, 141-147.

Remarkable example of residential pombaline architecture, the palace that the bourgeois Rebelo de Andrade built around 1760 and later belonged to the Count of Seia, serves today to host the Open University. Despite the many changes that suffered over the years, especially the addition of an upper floor, the Palace Rebelo de Andrade presents either in the facade or in it’s interiors, reasons enough to have justified its classification as a Public Interest building, in 1971 (Dec. No. 516 of 22-11-71).

MARQUESES DA PRAIA PALACE
- 1784 Largo do Rato, 2.

Huge eighteenth century residence, with two main floors, simple façades with a predominance of a neoclassical geometry, broken only by the main entrance located under a large window with balcony. In the early nineteenth century, the palace was in possession of the Marquês de Viana, whose sumptuous feasts gave hail in Lisbon and eventually led him to the bankruptcy, and after 1876 the building belonged to the Marqueses da Praia, until 1974, when it was acquired by the Socialist Party. The palace was extended in 1839, at the expense of the nearby dishware factory, and then extinguished. The Marqueses de Viana had built at that time, a private chapel, the Chapel of Our Lady of Bonança, according to the project of the architect Manuel Joaquim de Sousa. This is the famous chapel of the Rato, which held protests against the colonial war in the years 60.

OLD COLLEGE OF NOBLE RIDING ARENA - Last quarter of the eighteenth century

Street Escola Politecnica, 60.

Classified as Public Interest Property (Dec. No. 95/78 of September 12 ).

PALMELA PALACE
- End of XVIII century/Modifications in 1822 and 1922

Street Escola Politécnica, 126-140.
It was originally the home of the architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, designed by him. The property possession then passed to the rich Count of Póvoa which undertook work to expand, transforming the modest building in a huge palace. In the mid-nineteenth century, came to belong to the Dukes of Palmela who performed new changes, especially the works made in 1902 that resulted in the current appearance of the palace.
Today, in this palace is installed with the Attorney General of the Republic.

POLITECNICAL SCHOOL - c. 1850-1878

Street Escola Politécnica, 54-58.
Project by the engineer JF Silva Costa and architect Pierre Joseph Pézerat. The imposing neoclassical building which gave its name to the street and now houses the Faculty of Science, was built on the former College of Nobles (1761-1837), and destroyed by fire in 1843. This in turn had succeeded, in that space, the Novitiate of the Society of Jesus (1619-1759).
Virtually nothing remains of these buildings, unless the use of some materials (masonry and tiles) and how the interior plan of the Polytechnic School was organized around the old cloister. Also note that the two baroque columns that form the monumental gateway are from the convent church of S. Francisco, destroyed by the Earthquake.
The Science university, which in 1911 replaced the Polytechnic School, includes the Museum of Natural History, Science, Mineralogy and Geology. It should also be noted the Astronomical Observatory of Mount Olivete, founded in 1863.

11 DOORS HOUSE - 1858

Escola Politécnica street, 55-65.
Project attributed to P.J. Pézerat (according to Pedro Bebiano Braga, The Seventh Hill, pp. 114-115). Observe the inside of Pharmacy Albano (paragraphs 57-59), with furniture and decoration of the late nineteenth century.

S. MAMEDE CHURCH - 1783-1861/ Restored em 1924

S. Mamede Square

Actually, the church of S. Mamede is a recent building (1924), a project by architect Raul Martinez, after a devastating fire in 1921 destroyed the ancient temple, whose construction took almost eighty years.
It is noted, within, some eighteenth century images, coming from other places: Our Lady of Conception (Novitiate and College of Nobles), Our Lady Mother of Men (hermitage in Vale do Pereiro), S. Sebastian (the only image that came from S. Mamede-old) and a marble statue representing Our Lady (Convento da Esperança).

BOTANICAL GARDEN - 1873

Street Escola politécnica, 54.
With exceptional scientific interest because of the variety and rarity of botanical species, the garden is a delightful green space in the Centre of the city, which must be maintained and enhanced.

It celebrates the entry of water from the aqueduct in to the city. The inscriptions, dating from 1773 and replaced the original ones 'censored' by the Marquês do Pombal. National Monument (Decree of 16-6-1910).

Utilized to receive and distribute the waters of the Aqueduct, being an essential component of water supply to the city of Lisbon. The deposit existing within it has a capacity of 5,500 cubic meters. At its west façade, Amoreiras street, is the house of the Registry, where they measured the flow of water circulating through underground tunnels, into the fountains of the city. Huge paving stone, with 37x33m and 17m high, the Mother of Water or Water House is a happy combination of architectural quality with utilitarian function. Currently this space is used for cultural activities. National Monument (Decree of 16-6-1910).

MODULES OF THE ANCIENT ROYAL COLLEGE OF MANUFACTURES -  Second half of the eighteenth century

Fabrica das Sedas alley, 35 to 49; Amoreiras square, 50-52; Fabrica dos Pentes alley and Póvoa alley. Project attributed to Carlos Mardel (1759).
From the pombaline manufacturing complex, three modules still exist, one of them quite altered. The Royal College of manufactured products covered several city blocks, filled with two-storey modular units that functioned as workshops, school and housing for artisans. The best preserved building is the former factory of Combs, recently classified as Public Interest Property (Decree No. 45/93 of 30 November). Even before, the dependencies of the Silks factory had earned the same rating. (Decree No. 29/84 of June 25).

BARATA SALGUEIRO QUARTER

This district belongs more to the Heart of Jesus county than to S. Mamede. It was developed, after 1880, close to the avenue and reached this in the early years of the twentieth century, preserving several buildings of that era especially in the Street Alexandre Herculano, with undeniable architectural quality. There were others who could not resist the invasion of enterprise architecture and were hopelessly demolished (recent case of nº 53 of the Street Alexandre Herculano, dated 1903).

RUA RODRIGO DA FONSECA

Although the street was open since 1882, most of the buildings took place only in the 20´s-30´s and in a few cases already in the 40s. Thus, it is possible to observe a varied number of representative buildings either Art Deco or Modernism Radical that make this street, along with the initial part of the Artilharia I street and the block of Street Nova S. Mamede / Street Salitre (cited above), a privileged space for analysis of modernist architecture in Lisbon.

INSTITUTIONS

Crowning the hill that descends the slope of Salitre and Liberdade avenue a set of cultural institutions are divided between research and entertainment. Under the influence of the College of Nobles and the Polytechnic - Faculty of Sciences, in its multifaceted functions and equipment, follows the traditions of the old pedagogical schools. Of course, with current methods. Although the headquarters of the Faculty is located at Campo Grande some scientific museums and the Botanical Gardens stayed here. Alexandre Herculano once wrote, in Legends and Narratives: '... places of honest or instructive pleasure, as botanical gardens and museums. " Perfect synthesis between leisure and education. These gardens, even in a broad sense of national parks or forests, are based on the experimentation, i.e., the study of the species in artificial habitats, but with the apparent condition of the natives, together with attachments museums, laboratories and libraries support. This core is worth a long visit.
Down the street Alegria and the Salitre alley we are at the door of an area of outstanding tradition that deserves special attention - the Parque Mayer .
It is recalled that the Salitre had already in 1770, a theatre that was intended to the people and the petty bourgeoisie and, where it accounted for farces and comedies, among them those of the Jewish.
Later, it was inaugurated in 1790 by the King D. João and Pina Manique, a bull ring, the first for the public. The seats were distributed according to classes.
Next to the Parque Mayer is the popular theatre. Born before its construction (1851) at the Gym Theatre, then went to the park where there were no lack of entertainment, snacks and entertainment.
With the Society's Park Avenue opened Maria Victoria Theatre, where he lived magazine.
The author of the major architectural structures was Cristino da Silva and it is expected that the future venture to the redevelopment of the Parque Mayer, respects the park entrance, the façade of the Capitol and the Artists' Café. It supports the existence of cafes, restaurants, shops, housing, theatres, museums, libraries, auditoriums and all that is normal to want in these cases. We discuss the Parque Mayer. we discuss the Avenue. We discuss the City.

The National Press is located in this county (S. Mamede) and the Mint is at Arco Cego. Thus, we will only make a brief reference to the National Press
The National Press is in the direct line of the Royal Press, created by charter of King José I, on December 24, 1768. In 1820 it’s called the National Press and in 1823 becomes Royal Typographic Workshop, in 1833, definitely, National Press.
The National Press is born by the initiative of the Marquês of Pombal and belongs to the reformative agenda pursued by the Marquês under the influence of "Enlightenment" Europe. It was imperative to read and study books.
With the Republic another thorough renovation of the National Press took place, with Louis Derouet. And it is this reviewer supports the proposals for spelling reform of José Dias Coelho. In 1972 takes place the last major reform that continues today.
